Why Choose Japan
Choosing medical care abroad means more than finding an institution that can provide advanced treatment — it means finding a place you can truly trust with your health and your family's wellbeing. This portal connects international patients with Japan International Hospitals (JIH) accredited facilities ready to welcome you.
Finding the right hospital in an unfamiliar country isn't easy. JIH-certified hospitals are rigorously evaluated by Medical Excellence JAPAN (MEJ), and each certified facility offers world-class expertise, a verified international patient program, and a healing environment rooted in Japanese culture.
Hospital quality alone, however, isn't the whole picture. Patients also need confidence in the providers who support them from pre-departure preparation through post-return follow-up. MEJ also promotes high standards among these medical travel assistance providers, through two frameworks: the Accredited Medical Travel Assistance Company (AMTAC) program and the Medical Travel Forum (MTF).
Medical Travel Assistance Providers

Japan stands out as a top destination for medical care.
Quality Care — Precision, Safety, and Compassion

Japan's healthcare is built on team-based medicine. Every patient is supported by a coordinated team of specialists, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians, rehabilitation therapists, and international medical coordinators working in close collaboration. For complex cases, detailed treatment plans are developed from multiple clinical perspectives.
Safety and precision are treated as non-negotiable. Rigorous infection control, step-by-step verification, and deep respect for patient privacy are standard practice. Transparent communication and informed consent are built into every interaction, creating a reassuring environment for patients and families traveling from abroad.

Japan International Hospital (JIH) Recommendation Program
To help Japanese medical institutions welcome more international patients, Medical Excellence JAPAN (MEJ) designates hospitals committed to accepting medical travelers as Japan International Hospitals (JIH), and shares this information overseas in partnership with the Japanese government.
MEJ evaluates each facility on multilingual communication, cross-departmental coordination, interpretation and document translation, and cultural competency — confirming that JIH-accredited hospitals meet high standards in both medical quality and international patient readiness.
Many JIH-accredited hospitals hold certification from the Japan Council for Quality Health Care (JCQHC), and several are also recognized by Joint Commission International (JCI), a global non-profit that evaluates hospitals and healthcare facilities worldwide against rigorous standards for quality and patient safety. Both the JCQHC framework and JCI's standards are internationally recognized by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).
One of the biggest barriers to seeking care abroad is uncertainty about both process and costs. To help with this, many JIH-accredited hospitals work with their designated medical travel support providers to make sure you understand the following before you travel:
- Which hospital and department may be most suitable
- What medical records are required
- What tests and treatments may be expected
- Estimated costs
- Post-return follow-up needs
Cost Transparency
A treatment overview and estimated costs can often be provided in advance, based on the medical information submitted. Final costs may vary depending on test results, treatment changes, additional procedures, length of stay, and interpretation or documentation fees. Any changes will be clearly communicated.
End-to-End Support
JIH-designated support providers offer comprehensive assistance — hospital matching, appointment coordination, medical visa support (as needed), flights and accommodation, interpreter services, and support for accompanying family members.
Japan's Enduring Appeal

Where you heal matters. Japan welcomes approximately 42 million international visitors annually (Japan National Tourism Organization, 2024 estimate) and consistently tops global surveys as the most desired return destination.
A Food Culture Like No Other (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 2013)
Washoku, Japan's culinary tradition recognized by UNESCO in 2013, emphasizes fresh seasonal ingredients, nutritional balance, and artful presentation. With lower sodium and fat options widely available, Japanese cuisine actively supports recovery during and after treatment.
Safety & Quality as a Standard
Japan is one of the world's safest countries. Reliable public transportation, immaculate streets, and strict quality standards give patients and families peace of mind both in and out of the hospital.
Four Seasons, Endless Healing
From cherry blossoms to autumn foliage, Japan's natural beauty changes with every season and offers gentle comfort during treatment. Hot spring resorts and tranquil natural retreats just a short trip from the city make Japan ideal for both medical recovery and renewal.
